Exploring the architecture of Hacienda Cañasgordas in Cali, Colombia, was a deeply emotional journey that transported my imagination back to its origins. As I photographed the patios, corridors, and doorways, I found myself contemplating the lives of those who first inhabited these spaces. I thought of their dreams, their customs, and their daily duties. I approached each composition with a profound subtlety, treating the frames with the reverence we owe to the sacred and often untold stories of our history.
This site holds immense historical weight as the place where the first proclamation of independence for the southwest region of Colombia was signed on July 3rd, 1810. Yet, in this series, the history feels intimate rather than distant. Every window and door suggests a lingering presence or a quiet suspicion. There is a sense that someone has just passed through or is about to emerge from the shadows. The images evoke the sensory memory of the space, ranging from the scent in the air to the subtle symphony of footsteps, rustling branches, and the whistling wind. In these halls, there is always the feeling that something is happening.
The creation of these works led me to research and reconnect with the roots of my home in Cali. Overlaying my language of dots and lines onto these photographs became an experience defined by color and sound. Each title reflects the auditory landscape of the moment, capturing either the sounds I heard while shooting or the ones I imagined while reflecting on the image. These markings serve to connect us across time to our colonial architecture and the natural world. Hacienda Cañasgordas is not a relic of the past. It is a vibrant and living place of magic that continues to teach us and inspire our dreams.
